How to choose the best Christmas gifts for kids
21/12/2009

Christmas - it's most people's favourite time of the year. With the holidays come Santa, extended family and presents. And then the trouble begins.

You have to buy presents for everyone, and you just keep wondering what to get for them. Of course, some of your family members are easy to shop for. There are socks, a DVD and a new tie for Dad, a gift card to the bookstore and new kitchen gear for Mom, and an over-sized rawhide bone for the dog. But what about buying the perfect presents for your kids? Suddenly it's Christmas and you feel the need to run to the mall to buy some last minute kids' gifts. Hey – you've known the adults in the family for a long time, and the dog is easy to please. Your kids, however, have much different needs and desires when it comes to Christmas presents, and your purchases should be well-planned.

Ideally, you have to be prepared several weeks or even months before Christmas Day arrives. After all, you want to get the best gifts for the best prices and fit them into your budget. You can buy ahead during special sales events and as your income allows.

I usually take advantage of garage sales and flea markets throughout the year, as well.

More gifts don't always mean that you need to go over your budget, if you just shop smart. Also remember, that a lot of products are cheaper when purchased online, due to Internet-only pricing and discounts.

But how could you guess what your little ones might be interested in, and what their needs are?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What age are your kids? Will you have to shop for baby gifts, toddler gifts, or a variety of presents for children of all ages?

You want to make sure that all presents are age-appropriate. You will often find age suggestions on toy packages and books. When you buy clothes, rather buy a size up from your kid's current size, because they will outgrow it in no time.

  2. If you have more than one child, will it cause any conflicts, if you buy different gifts for each kid, or should you buy the same general items for all kids of similar age?

A nice thing about personalised gifts is that two children can, for instance, receive the same exact present, but with their own name on it. Problem solved!

  3. What does your offspring need?

Are clothes getting too small? Maybe some custom baby clothes or personalised kids' t-shirts would be in order. Is there a need for new school items or hobby gear? You might want to consider looking into Mooo.com.au's personalised backpacks and pencil pouches. They are great for kids on the go!

  4. What kind of toys do your kids like? What do they already have? Are they mentioning that friends already have something they would like to have, as well? Have they written a wish list or a letter to Santa that might reveal clues as to what they want for Christmas?

You can have them write a wish list for Santa, of course, if they haven't done it yet, or have them tell you, what to write down for them, if they are still too young to write on their own. Or have them draw pictures, in lieu of words, or cut out product images from gift and toy catalogues under your careful supervision.

  5. Should the gifts foster learning or playfully trick your children into developing certain skills?

Personalised wooden name puzzles from Mooo.com.au are a great gift idea and help toddlers to enhance motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Fridge magnet alphabet letters and numbers can be a lot of fun, too.

  6. Does the kids’ room look like it could benefit from new 'child-approved' nursery decorations?

You could present your kids with some cool wall stickers in all kinds of colours and shapes, and even have them help apply those awesome kids’ bedroom decors piece by piece, while spending quality time with them. Another great option is kids' personalised canvas art. It is a nice way to distinguish one room from the next when your children start to take ownership in their room and belongings.

These were only a few ideas, but by answering all of the questions mentioned above, I am certain that you will find the very best kids' gifts, and make this Christmas a joy for the whole family!

Have a wonderful holiday season!
