Planning a Successful Birthday Party
19/03/2010
Planning a successful birthday party seems like quite a task, but in fact, it is not that difficult!
Invitations
Your child knows best who to invite to their birthday party; but if you don’t know all their friends’ parents, how are you going to invite those kids?
It’s very easy. Have your child ask their friends and classmates for their full name and phone numbers a few weeks ahead of time, and make a list. Then call the parents with the birthday details, and also get their address to mail out invitations, if needed.
Tip:
Always request RSVPs, so that you will have an idea of how much food and party favors to buy.
Another thing I can highly recommend is providing the invitee’s parents with a copy of a list of ideas of what kind of presents your child would enjoy. If the other parent agrees to buy a certain present, mark it off your list to prevent double gifting. Your kid will thank you, I promise!
Talking about “thank you” – making a list of all kids’ gifts with the name of the giver, while your child is unwrapping their gifts, is quite useful. It is a great gesture to show appreciation after a successful celebration to send all attendees “thank you” cards, noting how happy your child was with that personalised backpack or much wanted toy.
Let’s get back to the birthday invitations. There are many options available like, for example, hand-crafted cards, low-cost printed invitations in bulk, and fun birthday party invitations, such as offered by www.mooo.com.au. Choose an option that fits your time, skill and budget!
Event
Set a time and date that will work for all birthday guests, if possible, after making initial contact with their parents. Also choose and advise of a set time frame for the event for your convenience and theirs.
Choose the proper location and make reservations if needed.
Some favourite spots for birthday parties, besides your own home, are local parks, zoos, gaming centres, swimming pools and pizza restaurants.
Depending on the chosen location, make sure the weather forecast is favourable. Bad weather can ruin a day at the zoo or swimming pool!
Safety First
Make sure that you have enough helpers available, based on how many kids will be attending the party. A First Aid kit is also recommended. When kids play, “owies” happen…!
Games and Activities
Check with your child what games he or she likes. Some favourite party games and activities are:
- Egg run
- Simon says
- Pin the tail on the donkey
- Balloon shaving
- Piñata (Buy at a store or check online for easy paper mache piñata “how-to”s)
Food
Always have enough food and beverages for all party guests. Great kid-friendly food choices are low-mess finger foods, chips, hot dogs, and pasta and potato salad. Beverages may include fruit juice, Kool-aid and soda-pop. Lastly, there has to be a birthday cake or cupcakes!
Tip:
Make sure to order about two weeks ahead if you buy from a store, or bake the night before the event. If you aren’t the best baker, try a store-bought cake mix and frosting – they are almost fail-proof and inexpensive! Don’t forget the candles!
Lasting Memories
Last, but not least, memorable moments happen at birthday parties! Bring a digital camera and spare batteries, or maybe the camcorder, to capture those moments still to be enjoyed years later.
Now go and have a very happy and successful birthday with your child!
